Protein is everywhere in the news. We now know that as we age, we need more. Getting enough protein does not have to be hard. You should not rely on highly processed foods that contain added protein – protein tortilla chips and protein water, I am talking to you.
One sometimes overlooked food that is high in protein, shelf stable, affordable, and versatile is canned tuna. Sometimes shunned due to the thought of mercury, canned light tuna is actually low in mercury. Canned white or albacore tuna has higher mercury levels, but even this type of tuna can be consumed weekly.
Take advantage of the 22 grams of protein and only 100 calories (packed in water) in an entire can of tuna. If you choose tuna canned in oil it will, of course, have more calories. Here are some recipes to get you started. I highly recommend the tuna burger, give it a try!
